Exploring our world through SEEd

This year your child will explore the wonders of science through Utah’s SEEd standards — growing curious minds, asking questions, and discovering how the world works.

The four Grade 4 SEEd strands

Through SEEd storylines, students build big ideas as they investigate. Engineering design and scientific practices — asking questions, planning investigations, analyzing data, and using evidence — are woven through every strand.

Strand 4.1

Organisms Functioning in Their Environment

We study how living things grow, behave, and survive together. Students use fossils as clues about organisms and environments from long ago, and they explore how energy from food helps plants and animals live.

Strand 4.2

Energy Transfer

We investigate how energy moves and changes through motion, sound, light, heat, and electricity. Students design, test, and explain how energy can be stored and transferred.

Strand 4.3

Wave Patterns

We discover patterns in waves and explore how light helps us see and communicate. Amplitude, wavelength, and information transfer become tools for real scientific thinking.

Strand 4.4

Observable Patterns in the Sky

We watch the sky with scientists’ eyes. Students investigate patterns of the sun, moon, and stars, and how Earth’s movement creates changes we can observe.

4th grade field trip

Natural History Museum of Utah

Tentatively scheduled for January 14, 2027

University of Utah · Salt Lake City

Students will step back in time and explore the amazing natural world through hands-on exhibits and real specimens.

  • Explore fossils and ancient life.
  • Learn about Utah’s geologic history and changing environments.
  • Discover how plants and animals are adapted to survive.
  • Make connections between science and our world today.

Permission details and timing will be posted in Owl Post once the date is confirmed.

How families can help at home

Ask questions

Encourage curiosity! Ask “why” and “how” questions and explore the answers together.

Explore outdoors

Go on nature walks, look for plants and animals, and explore rocks, soil, and weather together.

Read & watch

Read science books or watch kid-friendly science shows and talk about what you learn.

Do science together

Try simple experiments at home using everyday items. Observe, test, and make predictions together.

Talk about it

Connect science to everyday life — cooking, weather, cars, plants, and animals.

Fun places to explore in Utah

Thanksgiving Point

Gardens, museums, and the farm — history, science, and nature together. Wonderful for patterns, measuring, and curious questions.

Utah Lake State Park

Explore ecosystems, water, rocks, and wildlife. Perfect for scientists who like muddy shoes and big skies.

Salt Lake arena tours

A lively way to notice energy, sound, and light behind big events — real-world physics with a soundtrack.

Mona Nature Center

Local animals, habitats, and hands-on science. A sweet day-trip for Strand 4.1 thinking.

Museum of Natural Curiosity

Fossils, space, dinosaurs, and more. Hands-on exhibits that pair beautifully with our SEEd storylines.

Fun science activities to try at home

Seed observation

Plant a seed and watch it grow! Keep a journal of your observations.

Weather watch

Track the weather each day. Look for patterns and changes.

Make a model

Build a model of a volcano or mountain using household items.

Energy hunt

Find five different forms of energy in your home or neighborhood.

Recycle & redesign

Create something new from recycled materials and test how it works.
